Star Trek Discovery’s latest casting – three Klingons – gives us the impression that there is a helluva story arc in development.DSC_Klingon.jpg

We welcome all the new additions to our Trekkie collective! The new cast must all be looking at there twitter notifications and it looks like this….

Galaxy_Quest_1999_Screenshot_0771.jpg

In addition to Doug Jones, Anthony Rapp and Michelle Yeoh who were announced recently, yesterday Chris Obi, Shazad Latif and Mary Chieffo were also added to the lineup. For character info and bio’s see the Startrek.com article.

The bit that intrigues us is the Klingon wording on the image.

We took straight to deciphering it but it’s been more tricky than anticipated. Some bits are straight forward however the font looks new so there’s an element of interpretation.

Over the five hours we spent picking it apart (and searching the house/garage/loft for the Klingon dictionary) we have changed our minds on it a bit.

The first word is giving us the most difficulty. Is the first letter in the first word ‘r’ or ‘gh’ ? At first we thought it was ‘r’

This makes the word either ghetwI’ meaning pretender although this could mean ‘role play’ – not necessarily meaning deception.
Or it could be retwI’ which from a bing translate shows as ‘time period ago’. But we can’t find anything more official to back that up. What do you think?

r.jpg

Thank you to @boleon74 for sending us this alphabet in different fonts for reference!

The second word appears to be luwIvlu’ta’

This is where I confess that I have attempted to learn Klingon many times!! (unsuccessfully, obviously). But words this long with apostrophes need to be broken down. I learnt that from trying to translate a Klingon drinking song!

lu is a pre-verb (is that the right term!?) so refers to who is doing the action, he/she/they

wIvlu’ is the verb in the middle of the word, this means to choose.

ta’ means done

Therefore I believe luwIvlu’ta’ can be translated as ‘they have chosen’

The next word qul is easier to translate as there are less symbols and it a well used word in the Klingon language ‘fire‘.

The last word we thought we had translated as ‘play’ but when we looked at other letters we think we got h and y mixed up. We think this says yIchu’ which can translate as engage. That’s a much more fitting word for the Trek universe!

Now it may be that this phrase was translated a day ago and is well reported already but we have been purposely ignoring because  we’re having lots of fun trying to work it out for ourselves!

That said, we work better as a collective so we’d love to hear your feedback. Are our translators working correctly? What do you think they are trying to tell us?

Our hunch is that it’s something like ‘some time ago, they chose to fire. Engage’ or ‘they chose to engage in fire’ or maybe even ‘the pretender chose to engage in fire.’? Depending on how we feel about that first letter?

It isn’t exactly leading us on a wild chase to Qo’noS and back but it could be a tag line to the show or a hint about the Klingons involvement. Either way, we want to know!!

PS. If you don’t follow Star Trek Discovery on Instagram, you should! They have been releasing announcements before their twitter and Facebook accounts. Not by much, but hey, we’ll take it! @startrekcbs

Choose your own crew with Sky Cinema UK

To Celebrate the Sky Cinema dedicated Star Trek Movies channel, Sky Cinema are giving us the chance to pick our own crew!

It’s not easy! We spend many hours discussing this amongst ourselves and with many of you. In fact, we were talking to Jordan Hoffman from the Official Engage Podcast just a couple of weeks ago about the complexities of picking your own crew. Its not just about the  individuals, its the relationships and how crew members complement each other. Whilst the likes of Spock, Data, Seven of Nine, Odo and T’Pol are brilliant characters. Would they all work well together? probably …. but the ship might not be as exciting without people like Dax, Tom Paris and Geordi for them to bounce off.

As you can see from the video above, Picard is a legend amongst the new cast! And rightly so. Also, they need to watch more Star Trek!

Hope you’re enjoying watching back to back Star Trek movies on Sky Cinema as much as we are! Which movie have you watched the most? And Let us know who you pick for your crew…..

CBS Action – Brief history of Trek

If you take a look at the ‘features‘ section on CBS Action’s website you might notice some familiar faces!

Screen Shot 2016-06-13 at 14.08.06

It’s us! We have contributed to their Treklog feature and we’d love to know what you think?

For you old timers you’ll know all about the history of Star Trek but hopefully it sets a background for new fans joining us. We also throw some opinions in for good measure.

What do you think? Did we accurately describe the major themes behind each series?

Where are you on the journey? Were you there from the beginning? Were you part of the great assimilation of the 1990’s? Or like our Trekkie In Training, part of the 21st century resurgence of Star Trek fandom?

CBS Action is available on Sky 148, Virgin 192, Freeview 64 and freesat 137

MAC Cosmetics Trek Inspired Collection

Load credit card and prepare to fire glitter! We are LOVING this! MAC Cosmetics and Star Trek are going on a joint mission to create a Trek inspired collection.

As MAC enthusiast myself I think this is a perfect collaboration. Why? MAC has a culture of acceptance. It’s ethos is to celebrate diversity and it’s own words “we are for All Ages, All Races, All Sexes.”

They have taken the ‘all races’ part literally this time as their collection boasts Orion, Betazoid, Borg and Human influences as this image/advert indicates.

MACCharacters
Guessing they didn’t want to pay Jeri, Marina and Nichelle for use of their image!

The irony is, the day before this was announced we were on the MAC Cosmetics site eyeing up their body paints for our Orion Slave Cosplay we are hoping to achieve at the Star Trek Las Vegas and Destination Star Trek conventions later this year,

Perhaps a specially commissioned Green Paint will be included?

I’d like to add how refreshing it is to see new markets being explored for collaboration with Star Trek merchandise. It’s great to see it branching outside novelty and collectables.

When purchasing Star Trek products I choose ones that express my interest, but are also useful and beautiful in my home. This ticks all three of those boxes which is actually rare for Star Trek merchandise these days.

Here’s what we’re hoping to see….

Seven of Nine

reward-seven-of-nine

Seven is all about dem lips! That’s Borg Perfection right there. Actually, they should name a lipstick ‘Borg Perfection’!

Seven isn’t heavy on the makeup, it’s all rather subtle. What would be nice is eyeshadows that work well with hooded eyelids (Like I have – Sam!). Also this would be a great time to bring back the Taupe eyebrow pencil that was discontinued. Rename it ‘The Queen’ or something!

Deanna Troi

parallels333

MAC have a few options available to them  thanks to Deanna’s changing looks over the series. But I think this is my favourite. Its just so 2370! umm I mean 90’s!

The 1990’s seem to be having a moment so let Deanna and her 50 shades of brown eyeshadow, the smokey eye and power blush rule!

Uhura

Uhura

Uhura’s look is iconic and is practically the ‘go-to’ look for most women cosplayers when doing a Star Trek look.
For the Uhura collection the obvious look is recreating that perfect eyeliner with the feline flicks. Some whispery falsies would work well too. The rest of Uhura’s look is in her amazing complexion which is as clear as her hailing frequencies. We’ll also be needing some nail polish because Uhura is always well manicured.

Orion Slave Girl

547a2070a12804b8fe1d2e244c9850fd0353f4d7

There’s a couple of directions they can go with the Orions. If we are to take their image as a clue, I’d suspect they’ll go with the Enterprise look over the nu-trek style (yay!). ce4d22c260b1e6c0529a7733c0457bd6

There isn’t much difference between the Enterprise girls and the iconic Vina from TOS. The only major difference being the shade of lipstick. Personally, I think the dark lip suits the Green girls better. (Don’t even get me started on the orange colour from the movie!).

Not only am I hoping for a body paint (purely selfish reasons!) but also someway of blending that look into the eyes. – A green smokey, some glitter? A contouring and finishing product would also help recreate this look.

So we will wait and see. And wait a long time too, because it won’t be available until 25th August online and inshore 1st September. We hope this is internationally, but we’ll let you know!

Here’s the garb from StarTrek.com:

This summer, MAC will introduce a collection of makeup inspired by Star Trek and, more specifically, Deanna Troi, Uhura, Seven of Nine and the Orion Girl, Vina. The 25-piece special deco collection will encompass lip, eye and face products.

Star Trek is an iconic pop culture phenomenon whose storylines pushed gender and racial boundaries,” MAC creative director James Gager said in a statement. “For its 50th anniversary, we celebrate each of Star Trek‘s powerful women in a transcending, transformational makeup collection.”

Portal 47 with Larry Nemecek

A couple of months ago we were teased with a new project called Portal 47 from “The universe’s renowned authority” on all things Star Trek, Larry “Dr. Trek” Nemecek.

11855879_1496528707325010_6387179218097844395_n

Portal 47 is now up and running and sounds amazing! It comes across as a virtual convention. If anyone has been to one of Larry’s talks or stall at a convention you will know he is a wealth of knowledge with memories, archives and friends from all series.

“Portal 47 may not be for all Trek fans but if you crave a new way to get a virtual backstage pass and hear from new voices of people who were there, like a min-con package all year long no matter where you live… Then beam aboard and deep-dive through the Portal with us!” – Larry Nemecek

But why wait to go to a convention to get the chance to just glimpse? Instead Larry offers Portal 47 as an immersive experience where he shares his knowledge,  treasure trove, questions and answers and even chats with other Trek guests.

So what do you get? Taken from Larry’s press release:

EVERY MONTH we’ll meet at virtual Portal 47 for your access pass:

My live, one-hour group telebriefing interview with a real-life Trek veteran from the series, movies and more, with your questions…

and the recoding afterwards.

A live, one-hour group roundtable “Ask Dr. Trek” telebriefing with me —on a topic, or your Q/As; decide what you want …

… and the recording afterwards

Open the vault: Exclusive Archive Access via one rare or exclusive audio, document and/or image file to download monthly. That object may well be the opening spark for our ADT Roundtables!

Three-day early advance access to all new guest vidchats and other undated posts at my TREKLAND blog.

Exclusive access to our new Portal 47 closed community on Facebook, just for our Portal Passers… where we can talk further or set up new areas for our various deep-dives.

15% DISCOUNT once a month on your winning bid at my Trekland Trunk events .. or on my own future merchandise. (Hmmm.. I guess that means… Portal 47 cards?)

 AND YES, EVEN LIVE:

An ANNUAL Portal 47 meetup drink and munchies at Vegas Trek, Comic-Con SanDiego, or a local con near you where I am a guest. Even if it’s just the two of us! (Trekkie Girls Hint: Larry is already signed up to at least 2 UK conventions in 2016)

PLUS 20% DISCOUNT on my new, one-day personal TREKLAND TOURS of choices off a menu of Trek film site locations, when you are in LA! (To be announced this winter)

We asked Larry what he has planned in the near future and there’s even more reason to sign up, If you join in November you’ll get an actual call sheet from DS9, Voyager or Enterprise!

Larry is also planning to bring in European timezone friendly calls. He just needs another 6 European based members to join the portal.

Pretty exciting eh!? There are various membership options and with the exchange rate in our favour (for us Brits), it works out cheaper than a trip to the cinema. To sign up, visit Portal 47 or perhaps give membership as a gift to a friend? *hint hint*!
