USS Riker’s Beard Recuiting Now!

If you haven’t heard of the USS Riker’s Beard then shame on you and on your hoooouuuuse!

The good crew of the USS Riker’s Beard are a group of Trekkies who met at the first Destination Star Trek London, all sharing the same hotel. The crew had brought with them the humble beginnings of their bridge set which has been slowly added to in the intervening years. Like all great crews they quickly built a strong rapport and meshed into one superb unit.

At the first DSTL the Riker’s Beard was simply then named the USS Customs House after their hotel. They later changed to the current name a name eponymous with all things great about science fiction generally in honour of the mighty hirsute one. The crew then started to build their ship from the inside out!

The Ship’s Captain, James Dillon has been building some incredible replica sets such as the Command chairs from the Enterprise D, a transporter set and panels. The crew assemble these at conventions across the UK and collect money on behalf of various charities at each event.

This crew promptly escape from these events to the United Kingdom underground where, to this day, they survive as agents of good. If you have a convention, if no one else can help, and if you can find them then maybe you can book USS Riker’s Beard!

Your Mission:

However the Riker’s Beard project is approaching a point of critical mass and needs additional crew to help maintain their presence as well as build their new super secret next construction project! If you are based in or near the Kent area and can help with assembling, transporting or storing these sets? Do you have skills with electronics, lighting, carpentry or special effects? Do you have a trailer, van or lorry to help with transporting these items? Do you have access to secure, safe and dry storage spaces for large sections of the sets? If the answer to any of these is yes then then the Good Ship Riker’s Beard needs you!

We have the Captain’s word, you’ll never wear a red shirt whilst lifting heavy objects! You can check out some of their work from this video at the SF Ball earlier this year. If you think you can help you can find the Riker’s Beard Facebook group “The Good Ship USS Riker’s Beard” (closed group) or contact the Captain on captain@rikersbeard.co.uk

Alexander killed K’Ehleyr!

How this evaded the chief of security, a Sherlock Holmes loving Android and sophisticated forensic technology is remarkable.

Found on one of the Star Trek fan groups on Facebook and posted with permission from it’s original poster Allen Thompson. This theory has changed the way we think of sweet little Alexander.

By Allen Thompson….

Duras did not kill K’ehleyr! Alexander did! My evidence..
First he was a aggressive little boy that wanted to attack other children! That episode showed it.
A future episode also showed he liked to lie.
But let’s get back to the episode that k’ehleyr was killed in. Worf comes in with Alexander to find her lying in blood. Does Alexander freak out?? No! He just stands their with almost evil stare. This little kid was not raised Klingon. He was raised more like a human. He should of freaked!! But let’s continue.

Worf ask who did this
“Gowron?” He asked
What does she say? Duras!! It was duras!! No she says “Alexander”
She just pointed out her killer!! Well Worfs ain’t listening. So with her dying breath she puts Alexanders hand on Worfs. She is hoping he would take the little homicidal brat into custody. But no Worf tells him to look at death. Again Alexander “not raised as a tough Klingon” just stairs with almost Norman Bates stare at his dead mom;)

What not to buy a Trekkie for Christmas

In previous years, we have scouted the net far and wide looking for the best gifts to help give the Star Trek fan in your life that perfect prezzie.

This year we thought we’d do things a bit differently. You see the problem with being such a well known fan of Star Trek is that it makes for easy gift giving. You can buy just about anything with the brand name stuck to it. Not to sound ungrateful but some products can range from weird to plain horrendous. So here’s a few of our favourite ‘What `the Spock, did they actually make that?’ products….

The Wrath Of Khan – Spock dying – Christmas tree decoration

When Hallmark were looking at Star Treks greatest moments to immortalise them, did they ever think ‘Spock dying on a Christmas tree might be a bit naff?’ Clearly not! You can enjoy this beautiful scene of death during the festive season too. Hey, why not have Tasha being shot by Armus of Jadzia being killed by Dukat too?

USS Enterprise Flying Disk

What is the point of this product! This more useless than a D-12 Bird of Prey being navigated by Guinan’s feelings! We suspect they want it to behave like a frisbee but even in the promotional video their best shot is them chucking an Enterprise shaped piece of plastic between them!

Enterprise cheeseboard

image

Newly released and obviously aimed at the desperate Christmas shoppers. It looks perfect because, well, cheese and it’s the shape of the Enterprise. But honestly, an Enterprise shaped cheeseboard!? How do people come up with this! We will admit to owning the Enterprise shaped bottle opener and the pizza cutter is clever but this!? Ok the cracker stacker is a nice touch. But Nacelle shaped cutlery!??

Disclaimer

This isn’t meant to offend anyone who loves these products, it’s just a bit of fun. If throwing an Enterprise shaped lump of plastic floats your boat then that’s Takei by us!

As Star Trek fans go, anything Trekkie-ish is good with us!

Virtual Reality Tour of the Enterprise D

This preview of the VR tour of the Ent-D has been floating around a couple of days. We finally sat down to watch it.

We are now convinced that if holodecks were to ever become a thing. We would be full blown Barclay style holo-addicts. You’ll find us at Holo’s Anonymous on a tuesday evening saying ‘It’s been 5 weeks since my last holosuite but I relapsed bad last night. I slept in my holographic quarters on board the Ent D again. Then I ran Vulcan Love Slave two in the holographic ships holodeck! I had to say ‘computer end program’ 6 times to get out!”

As for this preview of the Enterprise. Yep we’d live there. We’d buy an Oculus Rift for this!

Friendly request though. Please move Ten Forward off deck two. *Battling our nit-picking stereotype here*

The Red Shirt Diaries Season 2 – A chat with Ashley

After binge watching S1 of The Red Shirt Diaries (thanks for joining us on our tweet-along!) we got in touch with Ashley (aka Ensign Williams) for a chat before the launch of Season 2.

Season 2 launched last week with the Menagarie pt 1 & 2 now available and it continues it’s fitting tribute to TOS with its wit, style and improved fancy visual effects!

How did you get started with RSD?
I had had the idea for THE RED SHIRT DIARIES right after I graduated from university with the intent of building a show around a rewatch of TOS. I’d never seen TOS in order and blogs are such a popular medium that it seemed a natural match.

When I met Jason Inman I told him about the idea and he was able to bring the skills and understanding of youtube to THE RED SHIRT DIARIES and start it into production. (for those who don’t know, Jason worked for Rhett and Link and currently writes/produces for Screen Junkies and co-hosts DC All Access).

I remember Jason saying that it would be pretty easy to make THE RED SHIRT DIARIES happen and it has turned out to be the project I’ve given the most of my time and creative energy to!

Any plans for covering other series of Trek after RSD?

Chris Jones from Trek.fm gave us the title MEMOIRS OF A GOLD SHIRT that we’ve always tossed around as an idea for a TNG web series, but that is as much planning as we’ve done beyond finishing the second season right now.

I’m a gigantic Niner, so there’s always the chance that we’ll skip right over to a series about Terok Nor!

If you were to die as a red shirt, how would you like to go!?
Kicking and screaming and taking a part of Captain Kirk with me, because let’s be honest, it’ll be his fault.

Will we see Gertrude again?

YES.

Your favourite fan girl moment?
Meeting Conner Trinneer at STAR TREK LAS VEGAS this year. He knew about THE RED SHIRT DIARIES (which is insane), but he was just so genuinely nice and really sets the bar on how to conduct oneself in public.

Anything else you’re working on?

Jason and I cohost a podcast called GEEK HISTORY LESSON and this week’s episode is a discussion called BEST STAR TREK CREW EVER and we’re building our ideal crews out of all the shows/universes.
